On Tuesday, the Howell County Sheriff’s Office made a media post regarding a jury duty scam circulating this week. Scammers are calling residents, claiming they missed jury duty and threatening arrest unless the victim immediately pays a “fine” via Bitcoin. Legitimate courts and law enforcement will never demand payment via cryptocurrency. They will not call and threaten to arrest you for missing jury duty and demand money over the phone. If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately, do not give out personal information, do not send any payment, especially not via Bitcoin or gift cards.
