An Oregon County man is facing additional charges after attempting to escape custody during the booking process this week. According to the Oregon County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Austin Combs arrested Eric A. Novelo on an active warrant on October 1. Novelo appeared in court before being taken into custody without incident. While being booked around 9:07 a.m., Novelo was allowed to retrieve a phone number from his cellphone. When Deputy Combs briefly stepped away, Novelo fled through the back door of the sheriff’s office. Sheriff Eric King and Deputy Combs pursued him through the courthouse and out the south exit. Despite repeated commands to stop, Novelo continued running until Deputy Combs deployed a non-lethal JPX pepper ball gun, which caused Novelo to stumble and eventually fall. After resisting twice more, he was subdued, restrained, and escorted back to the sheriff’s office. Novelo now faces charges of Escape from Custody in addition to the active warrant. He is currently being held on a 24-hour hold pending formal charges.
