The Arkansas State Fire Marshal’s Office reports a troubling increase in fire-related deaths across the state this year. As of October 3, a total of 50 Arkansans have died in fires in 2025 — the highest yearly toll since 2016, when 47 fatalities were recorded. In comparison, 38 fire deaths were reported in 2021, 35 in 2022, 34 in 2023, and 27 in 2024. Officials say many of this year’s fatalities happened in homes without working smoke detectors. Arkansas continues to record fire fatality rates above the national average, especially in residential structures where most fire deaths occur. With October recognized as National Fire Prevention Month, the State Fire Marshal’s Office is urging residents to take simple, life-saving steps such as installing and maintaining working smoke alarms in their homes.
