State Audit to Begin in Shannon County This Month

Missouri State Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick has announced that a performance audit of Shannon County will begin later this month. While the review is part of the State Auditor’s regular schedule, it was moved up in response to concerns raised by local residents and county officials. Auditors are set to begin work on Monday, October 20, starting with an entrance meeting with county leaders. The most recent audit of Shannon County was released in 2018 and rated the county as “fair.” That report cited several areas needing improvement, including financial strain within the General Revenue Fund, which showed disbursements exceeding receipts in three of the four years reviewed. The audit also noted an outstanding balance owed to the Special Road and Bridge Fund and found that the county had not adequately reduced its property tax levy to offset sales tax revenue as required by law. Residents who wish to provide information confidentially during the ongoing audit can contact the State Auditor’s Whistleblower Hotline by calling 800-347-8597, emailing moaudit@auditor.mo.gov, or visiting auditor.mo.gov/hotline.
