The spotlight was shining brightly on Thayer High School as the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame named the Bobcats the inaugural recipient of the Friday Night Lights Award. This prestigious recognition celebrates the legacy, tradition, and community spirit that make Friday nights in Missouri high school football so special.

For more than nine decades, Thayer has proudly carried on the tradition of high school football under the lights at Louis Bozeman Field. Generations of players, coaches, cheerleaders, band members, and fans have filled the stands, waving Kelly green with pride and rallying behind the Bobcats. The Hall of Fame recognized not only the school’s long-standing excellence on the field but also its impact off the field — uniting a community and creating lifelong memories for alumni and families.

The Friday Night Lights Award was created by the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame to highlight programs whose traditions embody the true heart of high school football. As the inaugural honoree, Thayer sets the standard for what the award represents: passion, dedication, sportsmanship, and the unwavering bond between school and community.

Superintendent, coaches, and alumni expressed pride in the recognition, calling it a tribute not just to current athletes but to every Bobcat who has ever worn the jersey or supported from the stands.

Also honored on Wednesday was West Plains Football Coach and Athletic Director Greg Simpkins, who was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.  For more than 30 years, Coach Simpkins led with heart, integrity, and a passion for Zizzer athletics — leaving a lasting legacy that continues to inspire.

The Cabool Bulldogs 1968 state Champion Football Team was also inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame on Wednesday.
