A former Alton High School graduate has died during a solo hiking trip overseas, prompting an outpouring of support from the local community. Gunnar Kennedy, a 2023 Alton High School graduate and student at the University of Virginia, was found deceased last week in Slovenia while attempting to climb Mount Triglav. Kennedy had been studying abroad in Spain and traveled to Slovenia over the weekend to hike the country’s highest peak. According to his family, Kennedy separated from his friends to make a solo summit attempt on October 4. When he failed to return or catch his scheduled flight back to Spain, he was reported missing. After an extensive search joined by his family, who traveled to Slovenia to assist, Kennedy was located by search and rescue teams on Thursday. Preliminary reports suggest he may have encountered a storm, suffered hypothermia, and fell.
