The Missouri Department of Public Safety (DPS) is inviting volunteer fire departments with annual operating budgets of $50,000 or less to apply for state grants of up to $15,000 to purchase essential firefighting equipment. Eligible expenses under the program include firefighter turnout gear, hand tools, chainsaws, interoperable radio equipment, and wildland protective clothing. The grants require a 5% local cash match — meaning for equipment totaling $15,789.47, the local department would contribute $789.47, with the state covering the remaining $15,000. A total of $1.45 million in state funding is available, with the projected performance period running from Dec. 15, 2025, through May 15, 2026. The application window will close once eligible requests have been received to fulfill available funding. To qualify, departments must meet the definition outlined in Section 320.200(3) RSMo — as an organization providing fire suppression and related services such as fire prevention, rescue, emergency medical response, hazardous material handling, or special operations within a defined geographic area. Applications are being accepted exclusively through the Missouri Department of Public Safety’s WebGrants System at https://dps.mo.gov/dir/programs/dpsgrants/vfdg.php. DPS will serve as the program’s grant administrator.
