Two Ava men were taken into custody after authorities located explosive materials in the parking lot of the Ava Walmart earlier this month. According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and officers from the Ava Police Department responded to a report of individuals with what appeared to be pipe bombs. Upon arrival, law enforcement identified three male subjects, including one juvenile. The adults were identified as 50-year-old Gary Haden and 19-year-old James Haden, both of Ava. Authorities say the group was found in possession of short capped pipes, PyroDex gunpowder, 25 feet of fuse, and T-Rex black duct tape — materials commonly used to construct illegal explosive devices known as “crickets.” Deputy Pueppke placed both adult subjects on a 24-hour hold. A warrant was later issued for unlawful possession, transport, manufacture, and repair of an illegal weapon, as well as unlawful possession of an explosive weapon. Bond for Gary Haden was set at $2,500 cash only. The juvenile was detained and released to a family member, with the case being referred to juvenile court. Officials noted there was no indication the items were intended to be used at Walmart.
