As Daylight Saving Time comes to an end on Sunday, November 2, the American Red Cross is reminding residents to check their smoke alarms while turning clocks back. The organization says working smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half, making regular testing essential. Over the past nine months, Southern Missouri Red Cross volunteers have responded to 254 home fires, assisting 872 people impacted by those incidents. Home fires make up the majority of the roughly 65,000 disasters the Red Cross responds to nationwide each year. The Red Cross encourages families to ensure alarms are installed on every level of the home, replace batteries if needed, and practice home fire escape plans.
