The West Plains Zizzers are back on top once again. After capturing the program’s 14th team state title last year — their first since 2008 — the Zizzers made sure history didn’t take another 16 years to repeat itself. On Friday, West Plains delivered a dominant performance to secure the program’s 15th state championship. The Zizzers were second as a team at the first kilometer and led every split from that point on, running a true “Zizzer race” built on discipline, teamwork, and grit. Their team score stayed steady throughout, never dropping below 80 or rising above 83. Joseph Roberson led the way for West Plains, finishing seventh overall with a time of 16:09.0. Hunter Stanley followed closely behind in 12th place, crossing the line at 16:18.3. The middle pack of Chaska Shearin and Trevin Smith powered the team effort, taking 29th and 30th with times of 16:35.3 and 16:36.4. Blake Romans sealed the scoring with a 33rd-place finish in 16:44.3. Smith and Romans proved to be the difference makers, finishing as the top fourth and fifth runners in the field — giving West Plains an 18-point edge over runner-up Festus. The Zizzers finished with 81 points to Festus’ 86, cementing their place atop the podium once again. The West Plains Lady Zizzers did not disappoint as well; they finished second in the State as Runner-Ups, and Kaebrynn Gunter finished 2nd individually in the girls race as well.
