Missouri State University is finalizing a deal to hire Southern Methodist University offensive coordinator Casey Woods as its next head football coach, according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Woods has served as SMU’s offensive coordinator since 2021 and also coaches the Mustangs’ tight ends. Prior to his time at SMU, Woods spent two seasons on Missouri’s coaching staff under then-head coach Barry Odom. A former collegiate player, Woods played at the University of Tennessee from 2003 to 2007. Missouri State began its head coaching search after Ryan Beard left the program on December 11 to become the head coach at Coastal Carolina. The Missouri State University Board of Regents has scheduled a meeting for Friday, where the hire could be formally approved. The Bears are coming off their first season at the FBS level, finishing the year with a 7–5 record.
