An Arkansas man is facing charges in Oregon County in connection with a burglary at a rural school earlier this year. According to court documents, Curtis Lee Barton, of Jacksonville, Arkansas, has been charged with second-degree burglary following an incident at Koshkonong R-3 School. Deputies with the Oregon County Sheriff’s Office were notified on March 26, 2025, that the school had been broken into. Upon arrival, deputies reported finding a wall-mounted key safe pried open inside the superintendent’s office, with several keys missing. Investigators also discovered a broken exterior window in the same office. Surveillance video reportedly showed a suspect in the hallway of the superintendent’s office spray-painting a camera. The individual was also seen in other areas of the building, including both the middle school and elementary school. On May 1, Oregon County deputies were contacted by investigators in Wapello County, Iowa, who advised that Barton had been identified as a suspect in a string of burglaries across Iowa and Arkansas and was already in custody. Deputies later received a photograph and confirmed the suspect closely matched the individual seen in the Koshkonong school surveillance footage. Evidence related to the Missouri case was then shared with Iowa authorities. On December 31, 2025, Oregon County deputies were notified that Barton had been indicted in U.S. District Court for burglarizing more than 20 rural schools and businesses in Missouri and Iowa. Barton is currently incarcerated within the Missouri Department of Corrections. A warrant has been issued for his arrest in Oregon County, with bond set at $25,000.
