WILLOW SPRINGS, Mo. – Rep. Lisa Durnell (R-District 154) has joined Rep. Tricia Byrnes (R-Wentzville) and other members of the general assembly in urging Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe to call a special session to temporarily suspend the state’s motor fuel tax through December 31, 2026.
“Families and small businesses in our district are feeling real pain at the pump, and I support any responsible step that delivers immediate relief,” said Durnell.
Missouri’s total state gas tax is now 29.5 cents per gallon.
In 2021, members of the legislature enacted a 12.5-cent increase without voter approval, phased in at 2.5 cents per year over five years and fully in effect as of July 1, 2025. That phased-in hike amounts to roughly a 73.5% increase over the prior 17-cent rate.
While the law allows Missourians to request a refund of the increase, the process has proven cumbersome—requiring detailed receipts, VINs, and other documentation—and many residents have found it impractical to navigate.
Rep. Durnell believes a temporary pause is a common‑sense measure to ease her constituents’ pain at the pump, as well as for citizens across the state.
“Higher fuel prices drive up the cost of groceries, deliveries, and everyday bills. If we have the opportunity to pass legislation that provides much-needed relief, I support that effort,” she added.
The Missouri Department of Transportation has a reserve fund balance of approximately $1.655 billion currently.
Durnell will continue working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to protect taxpayers and maintain safe, reliable roads.
