On April 18th the West Plains Middle School administration contacted the Howell County Sheriff’s Office after a student reported another 12-year-old student was telling others that he had a firearm in his backpack. No firearm was located on the school property or at the student’s home. Then, on Monday, the Howell County Sheriff’s Office received a second report about the same 12-year-old student, who was not in attendance at school but sent a Snap Chat message to another student, with a photo of what appeared to be a Glock 17 firearm, with a threat. The Howell County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer stayed at the school, as safety protocols were initiated. West Plains Police Department Officers were called to assist and were immediately dispatched to the 12-year-old student’s home. When law enforcement made contact at the home, the mother and grandmother were no longer cooperating. The mother of the 12-year-old was arrested for a warrant out of Texas County, and the grandmother was arrested for interfering with law enforcement. The Howell County Sheriff’s Office obtained a search warrant for the home and a weapon was located. The 12-year-old student, as well as his 17-year-old brother, were taken into custody by Juvenile Division Due to the fact that both children were juveniles, their names will not be disclosed to the public.
