KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Chiefs trimmed their preseason roster on Tuesday as they prepare for their season opener on Sept. 5.
The back-to-back defending Super Bowl champions released wide receiver Kadarius Toney. Toney played a significant role in the Chiefs Super Bowl LVII win over Philadelphia with a receiving touchdown and a Super Bowl record 65-yard punt return to set up another score. But his production declined in 2023 and he was left off the Super Bowl LVIII active roster as a healthy scratch.
Wide receiver Justyn Ross was also waived on Tuesday. Ross had six catches for 53 yards in six games over the 2023 season.
The Chiefs also released running back Louis Rees-Zammit, Rees-Zammit, a rugby star, signed with the Chiefs in March through the NFL’s International Player Pathway program.
The Kansas City Chiefs have added some late help to its pass rush ahead of Tuesday’s 53-man roster cutdown.
According to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Kansas City acquired Arizona Cardinals outside linebacker Cam Thomas. In the deal, Kansas City gave up a seventh-round pick.
Thomas, a former third-round pick of the Cardinals from the 2022 NFL Draft, has three sacks in 32 career games. He has two years remaining on his rookie deal and will count for $1.4 million against the salary cap in 2024.
