
In a hearing that lasted more than two-and-a-half hours on Monday, officials from Missouri’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education presented their annual budget to the House Budget Committee. The department requested a nearly $500 million increase in funding, but Governor Mike Kehoe’s recommendation is only for $200 million of that. Deputy Commissioner of Learning Services Kelli Jones says the state needs to pay for more literacy coaches to continue the so-called LETRS (letters) literacy training program for teachers.
The program is one of multiple literacy initiatives that the governor did not recommend funding for. The final budget will be determined by the legislature
