On September 16th, 2024, the Thayer Police Department made a Facebook post asking for assistance from the public in identifying a vehicle and driver who failed to yield to a stopped school bus. During this incident, video footage revealed that several children were waiting to cross the roadway to board the bus for school. It can be seen in the video footage that the school bus crossing arm and stop sign were clearly visible. One of the children can be seen crossing the roadway just before a passing pickup truck neglected to stop for the school bus.
The driver of the pickup truck plead guilty in court this month to multiple traffic violation citations issued to him by Thayer School Resource Officer, Sergeant Bryant. The driver contested the charge(s) for endangering the welfare of a child, and a trial was held within Thayer Municipal Court. After trial, the driver was found guilty of the charge(s).
As a reminder to the public, we ask that you please be constantly aware of your surroundings not only during school hours but at all times. Operation of a motor vehicle is a divided attention task, and even the slightest distraction can ultimately result in tragedy. This department will thoroughly investigate and charge any violation of school bus traffic signals. Please keep in mind that we have the best intentions at heart and are doing our best to safeguard the children of this community
