MAMMOTH SPRING, AR—Early Saturday morning, high water from the Spring River in Mammoth Spring swept away a BNSF Railway bridge.  Along with the spans, the torrent washed away several cars of a coal train that had stopped on the bridge because of weather warnings in the area.

The train originated at a power plant near Atlanta and was returning to Springfield. The hopper cars were empty, no spilled cargo, and no railroad employees were injured.

Later on Saturday, BNSF Railway reported that several other portions of the rail line between West Plains and Jonesboro, AR, were covered by water and received varying degrees of damage.

The route, known as the Thayer South Subdivision,  is the main rail artery linking Kansas City, Springfield, and the southern U.S. Due to the washouts, all traffic on the line was halted on Saturday until further notice.

On Monday, BNSF announced it expected to have the segment through Mammoth Spring rebuilt and reopened by Thursday evening.
