The Thayer City Council met last night for their regular monthly meeting. The Meeting began with the Council accepting the certified election results. They then re-appointed Brent Collins as City Clerk, and re-appointed Justin Nelson as City Attorney, Daryl Childers as Chief of Police, and Matt Martin as Fire Chief and EMA Director. The Council also re-appointed Steven Clark as Mayor Pro Temp, and Janice Tolar as Treasurer, and they appointed councilmen Mark Bryant and Dirk Shultz to the Oregon County Recycling Board. Next, the council approved the consent agenda and agreed to pay bills. The City Council approved the court clerk to attend the MACA Conference. And they approved obtaining bids for the construction of the access road and approach to the Highway 63 project. The Chief of Police then requested and was approved to advertise for the position of the vacant patrol officer. After all the items on the agenda had finished, Councilman Steven Clark talked about what he thought might be a problem in the Position of Mayor held by Mayor Donna  Martin. Councilman Clark referred to several ordinances in the city that say an employee cannot supervise a family member. He said that since the Mayor is the Supervisor over the Police Department, it could be an issue since Mayor Martin’s Son is the assistant Police Chief. After hearing from the Mayor’s Attorney on the matter, the Mayor said she does not think it is a problem since she is not an employee.

The Mayor said she wants the City to be   transparent on all matters

After a lengthy discussion, Alderman Shultz made a motion to amend the ordinances in the matter to keep the mayor in Office. The Motion was seconded by Councilwoman Janice Tolar, and in a vote passed 3-1, with Shultz, Tolar, and Councilman Bryant all voting yes and Councilman Clark voting no.
