On Wednesday, at approximately 6:25 PM, Corporal Travis Weaver and Deputy Michael Pauly responded to a report of a domestic disturbance on State Route U in Willow Springs. According to witness statements, the incident began when 25-year-old Cyrus Lotu-Fa’Amanatu Maafala was reportedly abusing the family dog. When confronted about his actions, Maafala allegedly assaulted a male victim and threatened to burn down the home with family members, including children, inside. A lighter was reportedly taken from the suspect during the confrontation. Upon arrival, Deputy Pauly observed signs of physical altercations and found pools of gasoline on the wooden front porch of the home. When Deputy Pauly encountered Cyrus Maafala, he was armed with a large combat-style knife and actively refusing to comply with verbal commands. A short standoff ensued while awaiting additional deputies to arrive. Upon the arrival of Corporal Weaver, deputies continued to speak with Maafala in an attempt to get him to disarm. While deputies continued to give Maafala commands to drop the knife, he began to move toward the deputies while still armed. Deputy Pauly deployed a less-lethal shotgun, striking the suspect three times with super-sock rounds. Maafala dropped the weapon and was taken into custody without further incident. Maafala was cleared by medical staff, transported to the Howell County Jail, and placed on a 24-hour hold pending charges. Thursday, Cyrus Lotu-Fa’Amanatu Maafala of Waianae, HI was charged with Felony Domestic Assault, Felony Attempted Arson, Felony Armed Criminal Action, and Felony Resisting Arrest. He is currently being held on $100,000 bond.
