On August 11, 2025, at approximately 8:50 p.m., the Howell County SWAT Unit was activated in response to an armed barricade incident on State Route 17 in West Plains.
Earlier that evening, Howell County deputies responded to a residence for a reported domestic assault. Upon arrival, they located a female victim suffering from severe facial injuries and significant bleeding. Medical personnel were immediately requested to provide treatment. The victim of the initial assault was transported for medical care.
When deputies attempted to contact the suspect, later identified as Michael Maloy, he fled into the residence and barricaded himself in the basement. Moments later, a gunshot was heard from inside. Deputy Ryan quickly evacuated the remaining occupants of the home. Witnesses on scene informed deputies that Maloy had access to multiple firearms.
Upon the SWAT Unit’s arrival, a warrant for Maloy’s arrest was obtained and an interior drone was deployed to search the residence. The drone located Maloy lying face down on a bed with a shotgun beside him. When the drone approached, Maloy pointed the shotgun toward the drone. Maloy’s movements inside the home were monitored using the drone, and deputies made repeated announcements for him to surrender.
After multiple refusals, SWAT officers deployed CS gas into the residence in an effort to compel him to exit. Maloy eventually exited the residence and surrendered without further incident. EMS personnel treated Maloy at the scene for exposure to CS gas. He was then transported to the Howell County Jail.
Michael L. Maloy, of West Plains is being held on charges of felony first degree Domestic Assault with a $75,000 bond. Additional charges stemming from this incident will be forwarded to the Howell County Prosecutor’s Office.
