The Arkansas Board of Corrections announced Friday that the North Central Unit in Calico Rock will be renamed in honor of retiring Board Chairman Benny Magness. During the Board of Corrections meeting held Dec. 19, Vice Chairman Dr. William “Dubs” Byers made a motion to rename the facility the Benny Magness Unit. According to a news release, the motion was unanimously approved by the board. Magness has served on the Arkansas Board of Corrections since 1999 and was elected chairman in 2003. Board members said the renaming recognizes his long-standing leadership and years of service to the state’s correctional system. A formal ceremony to officially rename the facility is expected to be held in the coming months.
