A Marion County man remains hospitalized following a shooting incident that occurred earlier this month while deputies were responding to a report of a suicidal subject. According to Marion County Sheriff Gregg Alexander, the incident occurred on January 9 at a residence located off Arkansas State Highway 14 South. Deputies were dispatched to the location after receiving a report of a suicidal male. Upon arrival, deputies found a house, a pickup truck, and a tractor fully engulfed in flames. Authorities say 72-year-old Kenneth Nelson, of rural Yellville, was standing near the burning pickup while holding a gasoline container. Sheriff Alexander reported that deputies ordered Nelson to drop the container, but he failed to comply. He then drew a firearm and shot himself in the head. Deputies secured the weapon and moved Nelson away from the burning structures and vehicles. Nelson was airlifted to Cox Medical Center South in Springfield for treatment, where he remains hospitalized. The sheriff’s office says the investigation remains ongoing, and criminal charges are expected to be filed once Nelson is released from the hospital.
