It is with deep regret that the West Plains Police Department has lost a valued member of the Police Department. On Sunday, April 7, 2019 the Police Department medically retired Canine Tuk so he could have some quality time in his retirement. Tuk has been having some coordination issues as well as experiencing fatigue in his rear quarters. His handler advised that over the past two to three weeks he has not been as active.
The Veterinarian that overlooks our Canine Program indicated that Tuk is exhibiting typical early signs of degenerative myelopathy, described as an intervertebral disc disease. This disease is progressive at variable speeds. It is difficult to predict with accuracy the length of time until Tuk will be unable to walk and recommended retirement.
Tuk was born on March 2, 2010 where he was purchased by the City of West Plains on July 12, 2011. Tuk started his training in July 2011 and was in-service as a Canine Officer in March 2012 where he has been a member of the West Plains Police Department serving the community of West Plains with Honor and distinction since that time. A review of the deteriorating condition of Tuk and recommendations of the Veterinarian, Tuk was removed from active duty so he could have some form of quality of life for his retirement.
The Canine Program is extremely beneficial and important to the West Plains Police Department and the Community that they serve. During his tenure, Tuk has responded to 436 Calls of Service and has located 67.2 ounces of Meth, 12.6 pounds of Marijuana, 55 cases of Drug Paraphernalia, thirty Criminal Tracks with apprehensions and Drug Arrests. Tuk was also utilized for three weapon article seizures and seized over $1,322 in currency.
The Police Department will be reviewing opportunities to find funding to replace Tuk as this enormous asset will be missed by the members of the West Plains Police Department.
