ACHI urging caution during family gatherings at Christmas time

As the holidays edge closer and closer every day, the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement asks you to use caution.

Amid a winter resurgence, the US reached a grim milestone this week and surpassed 800,000 deaths.

One out of every 100 older Americans has perished due to the coronavirus, with people 65 and older making up nearly 75% of total deaths.

In Arkansas, cases and hospitalizations are back on the increase, and with numbers of hospitalized patients reaching levels that haven’t been seen since mid-October, when counts started dropping again.

Many of us will be gathering with loved ones this holiday season amid the surging delta variant and the uncertainty created by the omicron variant, which — early data suggest — is several times more transmissible than delta.

ACHI suggests receiving your COVID-19 vaccine and booster when able:

  • Consider getting tested before your holiday events.
  • Gather outdoors if weather permits, and increase indoor ventilation by opening windows
  • Finally, wash hands before eating or serving food.
