Wednesday, Missouri senators heard a bill that would allow nonviolent imprisoned mothers to keep their infants with them in the correctional institution.

Incarcerated pregnant women would have the chance to stay with their newborns under a bill discussed by Missouri senators Wednesday.

The legislation would establish a “Correctional Center Nursery Program” and allow new mothers to live with their child in the institution for up to 18 months.

Bill sponsor, Senator Tony Luetkemeyer said the program would benefit both mother and child.

Women who give birth while imprisoned in Missouri continue to serve their sentences after delivery.
