Longtime West Plains Business Owner Gary York tells us he’s “thankful” for his years in the movie business.

York announced in late April that he would be retiring and selling the Glass Sword Cinema in West Plains.

He says they kept the new business a secret, and many thought it would be a convenience store, but that wasn’t the case.

The Cinema was built in 1977 by York and his father, starting with just two screens.

York says the twin cinema was a new concept when the business opened, and after a few months of being open for operation, “We realized it was the going thing. People wanted to have more choices.”

In 1985, the building was added on, opening “Glass Sword Cinema 3.”

Then in the 90s, Gary says an additional two cinemas were added on and eventually added the sixth cinema a few years later.

He told us it had been a struggle trying to survive the pandemic, and Gary catching COVID-19 himself didn’t help matters.

When asked what he will miss most, “the interaction with my customers, interacting with our guests when they enter the door is just as important as having a full cinema.”

Gary finishes his career with 45 years in the movie business.
