Thursday, West Plains City crews discovered the brick veneer on the northeast corner of the Butler House had collapsed, resulting in a gaping hole in the corner of the structure. The City’s Building official and Engineering Department conducted an on-site evaluation and the West Plains Police is also investigating to determine the possibility of vandalism, however at this time the cause of the damage is unknown. Upon further inspection by the city, it was discovered that a center support column in the basement had also collapsed. The City’s Building Inspector has condemned the house as being hazardous and uninhabitable, and crews will install construction fencing around the house. At this time, the Park will remain open, although the City will continue to monitor the situation. The City is still working with the Friends of Parkside House on an agreement to buy and then relocate the house to a different location.
