K9 Zeus and K9 York are replacing K9’s Amingo and K9 Kain. K9 Kain became a Deputy for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in 2016 and was handled by Lt. Taylor Wallace. K9 Kain was attributed to over 200 drug arrests in his time as a Deputy in Douglas County.
K9 Amigo became a Deputy for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in 2020 and was initially handled by Deputy Jonathan Harley before being handled by Cpl. James Nelson. K9 Amingo has been attributed to over 50 drug arrests, a fugitive track that resulted in an apprehension and a successful track on a lost child, during his time at Douglas County. Both K9’s have since been retired and are relaxing with their handlers.
K9 Zeus is handled by Cpl. James Nelson and K9 York is handled by Deputy Aaron Box. Both K9’s were imported from Europe and were trained at Blue Streak K9 in Jonesboro Arkansas. Both teams spent several weeks in Jonesboro bonding and becoming certified together in narcotics detection, handler protection, building search, article search, tracking and apprehension.
Douglas County Sheriff Chris Degase would like to commend the effort and time put forth by Cpl. Nelson and Deputy Box. It takes a lot of time and dedication to be a K9 handler and both Deputies have the drive to continue an already successful K9 program.
As many of you know, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has and always will continue to be committed to working hard to keep illegal narcotics out of Douglas County. The K9 program has played an integral part in the success we have had.
The Douglas County K9 program is operated mostly by donations and contributions from local and out of town businesses and the Citizens of Douglas County. If you would like to make a donation, the Douglas County Deputy Sheriff’s Association has obtained a 501c3 where tax deductible donations may be made or donations can be made straight to the K9 program. Cpl. Nelson and Deputy Box are selling tickets to raffle an AR15 and a Crossbow. You may contact either of the Deputies or the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office to purchase tickets.
Douglas County Sheriff Chris Degase would like to thank those that have sponsored and donated to the K9 program. Cpl. Nelson has started a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit Facebook page where he will post sponsors/donors and keep the Citizens updated on the activity of the K9’s.
