The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of a couple after shots were fired in a home in the county. Monday night, the Sheriff’s Office received a report from a neighbor that multiple shots were fired at a neighbor’s house on county road 529. This was a result of an ongoing feud between the neighbors.
Sheriff Degase and Deputies began responding to the area where they could hear the suspect male yelling. Sheriff Degase was familiar with the suspect from past dealings so he deployed the MJTF (Multi-jurisdictional task force). Ozark County Sheriff Cass Martin and deputies responded with their MRAP armored vehicle as well as Officers from the Ava PD.
The team deployed on the residence and suspect Joshua Bettis. The residence was contained and negotiations began to get Bettis and his live-in girlfriend Tabitha Medlock to exit their residence. At approximately 1:47 Tuesday morning both Bettis and Medlock exited the residence and were taken into custody without incident.
As Sheriff Degase and Deputies were conducting a sweep of the residence to ensure no one else was inside, Sheriff Degase located an explosive device and evacuated everyone from the residence.
The ATF, FBI, and Springfield Bomb Squad were contacted to assist with the dismantling of the explosive device.
The ATF, FBI, and Springfield Bomb Squad arrived on the scene at approximately 9 am. The Springfield Bomb Squad did locate an explosive device they described as being large enough to cause serious injury or death. The explosive device was rendered safe and the Springfield Bomb Squad assisted Detective Long with packaging the items he would need for evidence.
