The Howell County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents of a scam

scam-alert-2

The Howell County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous calls from citizens advising they have received a call from an unknown source stating a family member has been kidnapped. Citizens state the caller(s) demand money via gift cards in order for their family member to be returned safely. Citizens have also reported the caller(s) appear to be calling from a local phone number. The phone numbers used for these scams are easily fabricated and typically do not reflect the actual phone number being used to contact potential victims. If you receive a call of this nature, please contact the Sheriff’s office at (417) 256-2544, as well as contact the family member in question to confirm their safety. If you require assistance in checking a family member’s well-being please call the law enforcement agency that has jurisdiction in the area the family member lives and request a well-being check.
