
On July 26, at approximately 11 pm, Howell County Deputies responded to the Pottersville area on State Route K for a report of a dispute involving a firearm. Upon arrival, deputies made contact with a female subject walking along the roadway with apparent leg injuries. The victim reported that during the dispute, 42-year-old Brian R. Smith discharged a firearm at her feet, causing shrapnel to hit her legs resulting in injury. Howell County Deputies traveled to Smith’s residence on State Route K to make contact. Smith was located inside the residence and refused to comply with the deputies’ requests to come out and speak with them. The Howell County SWAT team was activated and responded to the scene, along with Crisis Negotiators from the West Plains Police Department. Smith was arrested and is being held in Howell County Adult Detention Center on a $100,000 bond. Smith has pled not guilty and will be in court on September 18.
