Bernice Helen Barnett

Bernice Helen (Williams) Barnett, 95, of West Plains, Missouri, passed from this life on Friday, April 25, 2025, at West Plains, Missouri. Bernice was born October 5, 1929, in Moko, Arkansas, to Thurman Lewis and Anna Iona (Emery) Williams.

She was born into a large family known for their musical talent, quick wit, and loving although ornery nature. She told countless stories of sibling antics and pranks although she had an affinity for playing music and singing with her family. Bernice brought joy to many through her talents on the piano, guitar, and her singing. Her love for music was a gift she shared generously with all.

She was married to Aulcie Barnett for 63 years, whom she loved deeply, and he loved her equally in return. They had two children, Bruce and Tom, that they loved dearly. Bernice would gladly brag on her boys, even as adults, to anyone who would listen. Together, Aulcie and Bernice loved to travel, often sharing the journey with friends and family. When they could not be together for a time, even after 50 plus years of marriage, Aulcie would watch the driveway for her return and then greet her at the car with a kiss.

God and family were the cornerstones of her life. The faith was her rock, and she shared it with her family in the most natural, loving way. She taught them all about kindness, forgiveness, and the quality of love through her example by living her life in Christ. Her love for the Lord was the foundation of who she was, and it brought her a lot of peace and joy.

She was never too busy to spend time with her loved ones, and had a special love for her grandchildren, great-grandchildren (Great-great, etc.) who were her pride and joy. Her home was always filled with laughter and love, as she made sure to create special moments with each of them. Both Bernice and Aulcie could be found playing games or playing dress up and putting on skits to make their grandchildren laugh.

Bernice was a beautician and homemaker who had a passion for sewing and cooking, though her family humorously admitted that she would often burn her culinary creations. This endearing trait became a family joke, one that “Grandma” embraced with her characteristic sense of humor. She loved to laugh, especially at herself, and her ability to find joy in life’s imperfections was infectious to be around as you would find yourself laughing with her.

Her legacy is one of love, laughter, and music. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but her spirit will live on in the memories and melodies she left behind.

She leaves to mourn her passing, two sons, Bruce Barnett (Laura) of West Plains, Missouri and Tom Barnett (Dee) of Nocona, Texas; five grandchildren, Michelle Neely (Scott), Dawn Jones, Nicole Barrett (Steven), Meagan Crider (Charles), and Mackenzie Holbrook (David); thirteen great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; brother, Russell Williams of Cayucos, California; two sisters, Joyce Perkins of Salem, Arkansas and Donna Rickett (Marvin) of Searcy, Arkansas; many other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband (Aulcie Barnett), parents (Thurman and Anna Williams), five brothers, and two sisters.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, May 2, 2025, at Barker Funeral Home in Salem, Arkansas with Bro. Dan Campbell officiating. Visitation will be 1:00 P.M. until time of service on Friday, May 2, 2025, at Barker Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Stateline Cemetery in Moko, Arkansas. Stephen Edward Maguffee

Stephen Edward Maguffee, of Salem, Arkansas, passed away on April 25, 2025, at the age of 70. Born on January 3, 1955, Steve lived a life filled with stories, sharp wit, and a deep—sometimes complicated—love for those around him.

He is survived by his children: Craig Maguffee-Smith (Rebekah), Meghan Thorne (Craig), Dustin Maguffee (Ciera), and Tyler Maguffee (Daisy); his beloved grandchildren: Kamden Smith, Elouise Thorne, Stella Thorne, Omie Maguffee, and Lovy Maguffee; and his siblings Kathy Phillips and Bob Gregory (Wanda).

He also leaves behind his nieces: Ronda Nakoa, Ginger Buck, Anita Durham, and Tammy Hussung — who became his lifeline in his later years, offering unwavering care, support, and love when he needed it most.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Stella Martin Thomas and J.N. Maguffee; his sister Judy King; brothers-in-law Carl King and Joe Phillips; and nephew Greg King.

For many years, Steve worked for Burlington Northern Railroad — a job that brought him pride, purpose, and plenty of tales to tell. In his youth, he loved two things above all: basketball and women. He probably broke even on the basketball bets — and as for the women, well… let’s just say there were more former wives than could reasonably be listed here.

A die-hard Arkansas Razorbacks fan, Steve could talk Hogs football and basketball for hours. If you ever saw a man in bright red cowboy boots, with a twinkle in his eye and a sly joke on his lips — that was probably Steve.

Behind the charm, though, was a man who fought a quiet and long battle with severe depression. When he was good, he was great — magnetic, funny, deeply affectionate. His struggles, however, often created distance and pain, both for himself and for those he loved. Yet through it all, his heart never stopped holding space for his family.

Steve was a complicated man — but he was ours. We’ll remember the laughter, the Razorback games, the red boots, and the endless stories. And we’ll carry the love he gave us in our hearts, always.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Mental Health America (mhanational.org) or Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (supportLPCH.org), in honor of Steve’s memory and in support of causes close to his heart.

A celebration of Steve’s life will be 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Monday, June 9, 2025, at Old Main in Salem, Arkansas.

Kevin James Amrhein Sr.

Born on November 24, 1958, in Buffalo, New York and passed on April 17, 2025, in Mammoth Springs, Arkansas

If you ever needed a laugh, a plate of food, or someone to help you out, our dad was your guy.

Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, Dad lived a life full of family, fishing, haggling, and heart. He had a gift for finding treasure where everyone else saw junk—and somehow, he could talk a vendor down with nothing more than a grin and a story. Dad could sell just about anything to anyone, and you’d walk away thinking you got the best deal of your life… and honestly, you probably did. That was his magic.

Over the years, Dad ran several pet stores in West Plains and Cherokee Village, blending his love for animals—especially fish—with his natural talent for business. He built custom aquariums by hand, each one a little masterpiece. His shops weren’t just businesses; they were community hubs filled with conversation, laughter, and the calming sound of bubbling tanks.  Later in life, Dad found a second calling as a car salesman—and he absolutely loved it. It wasn’t just about the cars (though he knew every detail); it was about the people. He made customers feel like lifelong friends, and he lit up every time he helped someone drive away happy. It was the perfect job for a man who never met a stranger and could talk to anyone about anything.

Sundays were sacred growing up. The smell of Dad’s cooking filled the house, and somehow, the table always had room for one more. Whether you were family, a friend, or just someone passing by, you were welcome.

His laugh? You could hear it from across the room.
His advice? Usually unsolicited—but somehow always exactly what you needed to hear. He had a way of showing up exactly when you needed him most. He gave freely of his time, his recipes, and his love. And if you were one of his kids, you could count on a phone call almost every single day—sometimes to check in, sometimes to share a joke, sometimes just to say, “Hey, I love you.” Those calls were a thread that kept us all grounded, a daily reminder that we were never alone.

Some of his favorite sayings will stick with us forever:
“Oh boy,”
“Who’s your buddy, who’s your pal?”
And our favorite: “I love you more.”

Dad is survived by a wild, loving crew who adored him:
Kevin Amrhein Jr. and his wife Elizabeth, Carrie and her husband Corben Shull, Josh Amrhein, Casey Amrhein and his wife Sarah, Michael Amrhein and his wife London, Aaron Amrhein, Matthew Amrhein and his wife Katelyn, Steven Baker and his wife Jessica, Cassie and Bradley Sloniker,
Megan Charbauski, and his extended daughter Tiffany Dugan, who held a special place in his heart. He was the proud grandpa of 32 grandkids and 6 great-grandkids, each one a shining light in his world. He also leaves behind his brothers Doug, Bruce, and Bobby.

Dad was welcomed into heaven by his parents, Frederick and Mildred Amrhein; his former wife, Ann Marie Harrington (1983); his beloved wife, Anna Marie Baker (2023); his son Bryan (2015); and his siblings Yvette Krol, Priscilla Bucceri, Skip, and Ron.

He was the kind of dad who could make you laugh on your worst day.
The kind of grandpa who always had time for a snack or a story.
The kind of guy who never met a stranger. If there was a deal to be made or a joke to be told, he was already there—smiling. He left a mark on every person lucky enough to know him, and we know he’d be humbled by how many lives he touched with his humor, kindness, and big, generous heart.

We’ll miss him at every family dinner, every fishing trip, and every flea market. But we know he’s up there somewhere—grilling something amazing, making a deal, and keeping an eye on all of us.

A Memorial service will be held at Saddle Cemetery in Mammoth Springs, Arkansas, on April 26th at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Charles Kirby. After the service, all are welcome to gather at Fred’s Fish House to share memories and celebrate a life well-lived.

Thomas Kappelmann

Thomas Kappelmann was one of a kind. He was known for having many quirks and a unique sense of humor. Thomas was well known as a hermit, he didn’t like to leave home. He was the one that volunteered to stay home and watch his beloved dog, Xena. Thomas would be the first to tell you that the most important thing in life is family. He loved his wife, daughters, grandkids, son-in-laws, and many friends above all else.

Thomas was the ultimate “girl dad!” He was very hands-on and involved with raising his daughters. He loved his girls dearly, hugged them frequently, and taught them about hunting, shooting, fishing, carpentry, fighting and any other hands-on skill that they wanted to know about or that he thought they needed to know. He truly believed that his daughters could do anything they set their minds to.

Thomas loved the outdoors with his entire soul. He would spend hours everyday just walking around the woods enjoying nature, no matter if it was day or night. As a younger man, he loved canoeing on the local rivers. He taught his kids and grandkids how to canoe and swim and believe it or not, he taught them about jumping off bluffs and bridges, but with all the safety information and warnings of caution that could be mustered.

Thomas loved all forms of music. He taught himself to play multiple instruments, had a great singing voice, and even wrote songs. He performed in bands as a young man and sang in family weddings as he got older. There were many nights spent with the guitar and his girls teaching them to sing and make music. It was always a special treat at family gatherings when he would break out his guitar and play while the whole family called out songs and sang along.

Thomas is survived by the love of his life, his wife Gail, daughters Heather Rees (Ric), Heidi Darrow (Michael), and Tomi Coomer (Brad), Grandson Elijah Pettit (Paige), granddaughter Gracie Coomer and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and former students all of whom are better for having known him.
