A Pomona man was accused of unlawful possession of an illegal weapon after he was found in a vehicle with an explosive device and entered a not-guilty plea. 36-year-old Rodney Smith is free on bond and will be back in court for arraignment on March 17th. In February Smith was arrested by Howell County Deputies after they were dispatched to county road 5130 off CC highway after a caller reported a vehicle parked in the road with the driver slumped over the steering wheel. When they arrived they found Smith who had a suspended license and then searched his vehicle. Deputies found a  piece of PVC pipe, half an inch in diameter and about 6 inches long, with caps glued on each end and an apparent fuse protruding from one of the glued caps. The Highway Patrol Bomb Squad was called. They assessed the device and determined it was an explosive device. They took it to a safe location and rendered it safe.
